This course begins with the basic mechanisms of coagulation and the vascular phase of hemostasis, then presents the common anticoagulants, such as warfarin and heparin, proceeding to low-molecular-weight heparins, heparinoids, thrombin inhibitors, fibrinolytic agents and platelet function inhibitors. The action of each drug is discussed along with therapeutic levels, appropriate monitoring methods and adverse effects. The participant will gain a thorough understanding of not only the new medications and appropriate assay procedures, but also an understanding of the traditional anticoagulant drugs and the changes that have occurred in monitoring.
