The World Health Organization (WHO) was first published in 2001. The classification was adopted rapidly by the medical community. With the influx of knowledge in cytogenetics, immunophenotyping and molecular studies, it became necessary to do a second publication. The update was known as the WHO 2008 revision. This update expanded the section of AML with recurrent genetic abnormalities significantly.

This self-study course introduces the participant to the 2008 WHO revision of AML with recurrent genetic abnormalities. Each subset will be discussed and morphology presented. It includes pertinent cytochemistry, cytogenetics and immunophenotyping.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss an overview of leukemia.
  • Review the findings of each subtype
  • Observe the morphologic findings with each type of leukemia
  • Correlate the cytochemistry, cytogenetics and immunophenotyping.
  • Understand the various types of therapy used.

The CD serves as an excellent resource to educate students or working professionals who are interested in acquiring knowledge in this particular area of hematology.
