232-Online: Bacterial Biofilms – What Are They and Are They Important?

Contact Hours (Points): 1.5

Biofilm formation is recognized as causing or exacerbating numerous chronic infections including periodontitis, device-related infections, cystic fibrosis pneumonia, chronic urinary tract infections, recurrent tonsillitis, chronic rhinosinusitis and chronic wound infections. Of grave concern, presence of biofilm is associated with increased bacterial resistance to antimicrobic therapy and resultant treatment failure. The role of the clinical laboratory in diagnosis of biofilm-associated infection is in its initial stages of addressing this problem. This self-study serves as an update on biofilms and their identification. This course was adapted from a presentation given by the author for the CACMLE “2012 Grand Rounds in Clinical Laboratory Microbiology and Infectious Disease” Teleconference Series. The audio component of this course was modified from this presentation and divided into frame specific narrations.
