243-Online: Massive Transfusion – Not Just a Blood Bank Problem!

Contact Hours (Points): 1.5

In many places, massive transfusion and trauma are considered synonymous, but there are reasons other than trauma for a patient to need massive transfusion. Using two real life scenarios (case studies), this Self-Study course discusses the changes in laboratory test values seen in the blood bank, hematology, coagulation and chemistry that may occur in patients who receive massive transfusions and apply that understanding to non-trauma cases. Topics will include the following:

  • An example of massive transfusion in trauma
  • Discussion of some of the side effects of massive transfusion
  • Application of that information to non-trauma cases

This self-study was adapted from a presentation given by the author for the CACMLE “2013 CACMLE Blood Bank, Hematology/Coagulation, and Chemistry Webinar Series”. The audio component of this course was modified from this presentation and divided into frame specific narrations.
