Many viruses such as SARS and West Nile Virus have come to the fore front of public awareness. This self-study course addresses the properties and taxonomy of viruses (critical to understanding viral diseases and diagnosis), and laboratory techniques in clinical virology. Additionally, antiviral agents will be summarized. Practical information will be provided on specimen collection, handling and processing. Isolation and identification of viruses in cell culture will be reviewed as well as nonculture approaches to virus detection, including direct antigen detection and molecular methods. An overview of serologic methods will also be provided.
